Life imprisonment was today awarded to all the five accused in the Danish woman gang rape case by the Delhi Court.
The prosecution had argued for the same quantum of sentence, while counsel for the accused had sought the minimum sentence of 20 years as provided in the law. All the convicts apart from one are in their twenties and hail from economically lower stratum. The defence counsel had sought a lesser punishment for them on these two grounds.
The five convicts are Mahendra alias Ganja, Mohd Raja, Raju, Arjun, Raju Chakk. The prosecution argued that the convicts had assaulted the woman in a barbaric manner and lowered the prestige of the country abroad. For that reason, they should handed out exemplary punishment to send across a strong message that the rule of law prevailed in the country.
