Is #MeToo campaign a social gimmick?

Campaigns started on social media to help people have generally turned out to be a gimmick later. Did you know that hundreds of popular and successful men in India are grabbing headlines these days for molesting girls in the media and Bollywood industry in the past? The reason behind their popularity is #MeToo that was originally started in the Hollywood industry to help the victims to speak out their molestation stories in public. However, slowly and gradually when there were reports of fake #MeToo stories just to remain in the limelight made this campaign questionable and difficult for people to count on it.

The major question that arises in almost every layman’s mind is that why did the victims not speak up on the very day the incident took place and if not at that time then why now? Actress Tanushree Dutta initiated the campaign in the B-town industry by speaking about being molested by actor Nana Patekar while shooting a song together but it seemed that the campaign backfired when people started raising questions about the reason behind her silence all this while.

Moreover, social media can never be an appropriate medium to get justice in the country; there have been campaigns started with the similar intension but had long ended. Publicizing your suffering on social media can only be with the intention to either be in the limelight or be famous over night.

A bag of mixed reaction was received when few students shared their views on the same while talking to pardaphash.com. Many students stated that mental disturbance could be the reason behind girls not speaking out their stories earlier while more number of students agreed that #MeToo is a social gimmick and supported their statement by saying that these actresses who are speaking out in public now is because they want to be in the limelight and gain sympathy from people out there.

In the recent past, there have been times when we all have witnessed people stooping down to any level in order to attain fame on social media because becoming famous over night these days on social networking sites is the easiest as viral videos and fake news is becoming the new trend with every passing day.
