Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati today shared a stage in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh after nearly 25 years and Mulayam was accompanied by his son and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati sat in between the father-son duo on stage taking everyone by surprise.
Mulayam delivered a brief speech and thanked Mayawati for campaigning for him in Mainipuri. “Aaj Mayawati ji ayi hain, unka hum swagat karte hain, aadar karte hain. Hume khushi hai ki hamare samarthan ke liye wo ayi hain. (We welcome and honour Mayawati ji who has come here to support us).”
Mulayam Singh Yadav has represented Mainpuri in the Lok Sabha for more than 15 years and will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election from this seat.
Mayawati also showered praises on Mulayam. “I am hopeful that you will vote Mulyam Singh Yadav to power with record votes. There is no doubt that the Samajwadi Party under Mulayam Singh Yadav had worked for the betterment of all section of society in Uttar Pradesh. He is the true leader of the oppressed and backward castes,” Mayawati said, before asking people to vote for cycle (SP symbol) in the Lok Sabha polls in Mainpuri.
But, twenty-two years ago, on June 15, 1997, Mulayam Singh Yadav was in Mainpuri for a diametrically opposite reason. Back then, he had a clear purpose for the visit: to build up momentum and unseat Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati from Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing a rally in Mainpuri he announced, Mayawati will be “dismissed in two months”.
