Shikhar Dhawan yesterday played a superb knock and smashed a brilliant century at the ACA-VDCA stadium, Dhawan scored his 12th century off 85 balls and along with Shreyas Iyer, who also hit his second fifty, helped India to a record eighth consecutive bilateral series win.

Chasing 216, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma cheaply for 7 after he was bowled by Akila Dananjaya’s googly but Dhawan and Iyer played cautiously. The left-hander got going with a flick off Dananjaya past mid on for a boundary but he got going in style by smashing Suranga Lakmal straight down the ground and crashing a drive through cover. The aggressive opener capitalised on some loose bowling as he and Iyer hit 35 runs in three overs to take the game away.

Dhawan neared his landmark by pulling Thisara Perera over mid wicket and he notched up his milestone in style by slog sweeping Dananjaya over deep mid wicket to bring up his second consecutive fifty of the series.

The left-hander continued to bat with assurance and nearly survived a run-out chance on 61. However, In the 26th over, Dhawan entered the 4000 club by driving Asela Gunaratne to long-off.
